Saint Seiya Omega 01 – The Life That Was Saved by Seiya! Revive, Legend of the Saints!

Anime Media

25 years after the Holy Wars of the 20th century that happened in the previous series, a new threat has appeared in the form of Mars, the god of war who attacks Athena. The now Gold Saint, Seiya protects her at the end and years later, a legend begins as the baby that Seiya saved, Kouga is now training to become a Saint with the guidance of Ophiuchus Shaina (role reprised by Mami Koyama), one of Seiya's old comrades back then.

Before talking about the series, it is best for me to talk about my limited knowledge about the Saint Seiya franchise. I was able to watch bits of the series when I was still young, lost interest with it because it aired in a morning timeslot, making me unable to watch it since I have classes during the time the series is airing. What made me lose my interest more is that during the times I have the chance to watch the series; it is either they are now in the middle of a story arc or it is just pure talking.

Okay, so why the heck I decide to pick this series? Simply because the series premise sounds interesting, the show being set after 25 years from the main series is one major point. In short, it is not required for me to watch the first series since the characters coming from that show will only have limited roles in the series. If there are parts that I think I need an explanation, I will just Google it. Now back to Saint Seiya Omega!

The first thing I noticed in the series is the artwork. The artwork reminded me a lot of Casshern Sins, a very good anime in my opinion. It doesn't help that Seiya is voiced by Tohru Furuya, the same guy who voiced Casshern in the said series! Another thing I noticed is Athena's hair in the series, why is it purple? I did a quick research and it turns out that in the original anime, she has purple hair but in the manga, she has brown hair. Guess Toei decided not to fix it for the sake of continuity and for the fans that grew up watching Saint Seiya. In terms of animation, I notice a lot of instances of bad quality, but hey, it is understandable since most of it is distant shots of some characters. The character designs in the series look impressive in my opinion. The redesigns for the characters of the previous season looked good. As for the new characters such as Kouga and Mars, Pegasus Kouga's armor looks cool as for Mars, his helmet looked like Sogeking's helmet from One Piece less the long nose but since he is one cool villain, I can let this pass.

The opening fight featuring the battle between Seiya and Mars looks good. What made the fight more interesting is how it was animated. It has this old school vibe in it. The mix of old school animation effects and the latest animation technology gave the fight this feel, like you are a kid from the 80's or 90's. Kouga's training with Shaina reminded me of the earlier episodes of Saint Seiya wherein Seiya was being trained by his master, who also wears a mask. What's more is that Kouga feels exactly like Seiya when he was younger! What's more is the speech about the Cosmo helped newer fans to grasp the concept of the Saint Seiya universe. I did some quick research in regards to how the earlier episodes of Saint Seiya where like and I found out that Cosmo speech is a direct reference to the earlier episodes of the anime where Seiya is listening to that same speech!

Speaking of older Saint Seiya related stuff, the opening theme song of the series is an "updated" version of the original Saint Seiya theme. The later fight in the episode where we see the return of Mars looks really good. Ophiuchus Shiana's fight with Mars looks impressive as well as how it was animated. Shaina's burning scene makes viewers feel pity to one brutal teacher. Kouga's first transformation as a Pegasus Bronze Saint looks good in my opinion. Him meeting Seiya for the second time is one of the highlights in the episode that gives the viewers the feeling of the past hero passing on his torch to the new hero. As for Kouga's first fight as a Saint, it's fine I guess. His fighting style feels a bit rough that he only did for this episode is to do multiple punches just to destroy the fire created by Mars.

First impressions for the characters, Kouga is similar to Seiya when he was younger, a bit brash, hot headed and doesn't have the idea on why he must become a Saint. Saori aka Athena acts as the mother figure to Kouga. I did some quick research about Saori and it turns out that her original voice actress didn't reprise the said role for Saint Seiya Omega, instead Shoko Nakagawa, a fan of the original series is now voicing Saori. Mars is a badass and achieved a lot as a villain within the span of the first episode. Shaina is one brutal mentor that she didn't show any mercy to a 13-year old Saint in-training.

As for Seiya, I see him as the badass heroic figure that Kouga must surpass since he was once a Bronze Saint before he achieved the Gold Saint status. There are some things I am bothered with Saint Seiya Omega, first is why is it Kouga must be trained by a female Saint and not any of the male Saints under Athena? Second, what happened to Seiya after his fight with Mars? Did he die and now act as Kouga's spiritual mentor or something? Lastly, why the heck the producers decided to name the show's main villain, Mars and not Ares even if the show is heavily based on Greek mythology?

The episode ends with Pegasus Kouga charging towards Mars... and the good ol' "To be continued" sign makes its comeback. It's been years since I haven't seen that sign in anime.
